Character Sheet

Session Zero: 05/26/2025

Recommended Training Package: Character Creation + Cast Guidance

🌟 Session Recap & Key Takeaways

In this first session, we focused on understanding Ranger’s current challenges and identifying priority areas that will help support your transition to a new home and lifestyle:

  • Helping Ranger feel more at ease in new environments, especially on walks

  • Building coping strategies for reactivity to dogs (goal: neutrality)

  • Improving self-regulation and separation comfort when not crated or with you

  • Reducing alert barking, especially relevant for condo living

  • Addressing ingestion of non-food items

  • Starting groundwork for cooperative care at home and in the vet's office

To begin addressing these, we introduced three foundational exercises that focus on mindset and emotional regulation:

1. Food Scatters
These are used to help shift Ranger’s focus and create positive associations in various contexts. 👉 Be sure to pair this with a consistent cue word and allow time for gradual exploration. Scatters are intentionally unstructured to encourage natural decompression.

  • On walks: Helps counteract hypervigilance and create a cue-based expectation of reward

  • At home: Encourages relaxation and self-regulation

2. Look at That (LAT)
We’re currently focusing on just “Part 1” of this behavior:

  • Mark and reward while Ranger is still looking at a distraction (before escalation)

  • Use this with happy things or mild triggers outside

  • In future: can be applied indoors for coexisting without constant contact, and later for grooming/vet desensitization

3. Really Real Relaxation
This exercise follows a food scatter and promotes physical calm:

  • Begin in short sessions and reinforce stillness or lowered arousal

  • We’ll build toward using this in a variety of settings, including new environments or near mild triggers
