Berry
Overview
This initial session focused on understanding the current dynamics and challenges of transitioning to a two-dog household. We explored Razberry and Valentino’s unique behavior profiles, identifying key areas for management, training, and long-term support. Recommendations were tailored to build structure, prevent conflict, and support both dogs' emotional and behavioral well-being.
Razberry ("Berry")
Personality & Background: OG resident dog, generally dog social with some quirks.
Challenges:
Stranger danger
Separation anxiety (improved with Val's presence)
Frustration tolerance and attention-seeking/nuisance behaviors
Defensive/resource guarding around the sofa and high-value food
At-Home Dynamics:
Val may bark at Allison/Ian when they approach Berry on the sofa—anticipating a guarding reaction.
Berry may charge Val over high-value food items.
Valentino ("Val")
Personality & Background: Newly adopted, energetic, known to the family for years.
Challenges:
Leash reactivity (especially head-on and from behind)
Indoor reactivity (sounds, people/dogs passing by, delivery trucks)
Possibly vision-impaired or sensitive to unfamiliar approach
Notable Behaviors:
Trigger stacking
Sensitivity to noises and environmental stimuli
Calmer when greeted familiarly by neighbors
Training & Management Recommendations
Management in the Home:
Use tether points to allow shared space with structure
Establish predictable routines for approaching the couch
Supervise high-value food access and consider feeding separately
Training Together:
Begin name recognition games: Say one dog’s name, reward that dog
Add pauses, eye contact before rewarding, then introduce manners cues
Integrate into evening family play/training sessions
Val’s Reactivity:
Visual barriers for windows/doors
Use a reactivity tracker to monitor patterns and triggers
Decompression walks added regularly for both dogs
